Once upon a time in Jerusalem,
And this time – Carvel ice cream, near the old Mashbir.
The summer in Jerusalem was unbearably hot in the 1970s and 1980s.
No one had air conditioning at home.
The Jerusalemites had not yet heard of the invention and also out of Jerusalemite warrior pride –
“Soon the evening will fall and the air of Jerusalem will come.”
A whole and sweaty city in the middle of August waits all day for the evening breeze.
In grandfather tank tops and underwear on the couch in front of a new evening, with a jug of water, a watermelon with black seeds,
Ventilator – which is like a fan, only in Jerusalem slang, and which also makes noise.
The ventilator would spin half a weary turn, and everyone waited their turn for a short, fresh breeze.
Generations of children grew up attaching their lips to the ventilator mesh and practiced making sounds that were cut with the rotation of the blades-
So that in fact the invention of the electronic synthesizer actually started in the Holy City with two bored children on summer vacation.
free idea-
Maybe some lawyer who has been bored since then should demand copyright.
The stuttering red buses on the climbs of Mount Herzl had windows that opened with two butterfly-shaped hooks with teeth on each side.
The butterflies were lubricated and treated at the factory for the first and last time,
and lifting them up required the teamwork of two people, each on one side of the window and hydraulic palms,
So that most of the time the windows were stuck and some warm August air would enter the crowded bus and the passengers who held the grab bars with a raised hand and a sweat stain the entire trip,
When the other hand holds the full plastic basket after a sweaty walk in the market,
And all this goodness was in the days when deodorant was just an unsubstantiated rumor.
In the early 1990s, progress came to the city, and the Western world succeeded in the ascent of the castle and brought with it a cool and new spirit –
Carvel ice cream.
A shop that sold American ice cream with toppings of ground cookies, candies, and other special toppings, near the old Mashbir.
The ice cream was excellent – not that there was anything to compare, but the taste buds cannot be fooled.
The place also prepared milkshakes from American ice cream like the ones ordered by Ponzi’s gang with the leather jacket in far-away America,
And the feeling in the evening in Mashbir Square was only missing a drive-in cinema next to the corner hummus opposite.
The place caught on immediately and the whole town and their sister came to lick Carvel’s ice cream
and stood in line inside iron tracks while memorizing the order while under pressure from the buyer behind you – a Zionist soup Nazi.
Those who were there – will understand and will not forget.
But over time things changed-
The heat in the city in the middle of the summer has become deadly – either because of the global warming that is being talked about and denied by people who are closed in sealed and air-conditioned office buildings or because we have simply become spoiled.
Today, almost every house has an air conditioner,
The sound of the ventilator was replaced by apps,
And Carvel ice cream has long been replaced by chains of ice cream shops that sell ice cream by the carat.
May we hold on and not evaporate until autumn? In Sukkot as usual – rain.
Shabbat Shalom to all, far and near, from Jerusalem.
