The Katamon neighborhood was founded in south Jerusalem during the British Mandate by wealthy Arab businessmen. The monastery of San Simon is located in the Katamon neighborhood, around which heavy battles were fought during the War of Independence, in which the monastery took over the entire southern part of the city.
